Dallas strode toward the Sutter bam. Puzzled over the events of the past few days, he needed to talk to Aaron.
Miriam Richardson had seemed to soften toward Dallas as the inevitability of a wedding became apparent. At least sheâd resigned herself to the event. Big Daddy, on the other hand, had not resigned himself to anything concerning his future son-in-lawâs sudden appearance and unexpected stay. The old man barely tolerated the younger at Ten Oaks and seemed nearly apoplectic at his presence in the lumberyard.
Uncharacteristically, Dallas felt ill at ease broaching the subject with Julia, considering their unusual circumstances and altered relationship. But he needed to know why Big Daddy hated him so much.
Maybe Aaron Sutter could shed some light on the subject.
Dallas could see both Aaron and Helen unloading baled hay from a pickup. They paused when they caught sight of him, genuine welcome written on their faces.
âWe hoped weâd be seeing more of you,â Aaron said.
Helen brushed the back of her palm across her forehead. âThat was some invitation came this morning.â
Dallas suddenly felt uncomfortable. âI know itâs late notice. If you have something else more importantââ
âNothingâs more important,â Helen declared. She squinted at Dallas. âWhy the long face?â she asked in her usual blunt manner.
Heâd come to get some frank answers to a hard question. There was no use delaying. âCan either of you tell me why Big Daddy Richardson would hate me?â
Aaron scratched his head. âHateâs a strong word.â
âWell, itâs not strong enough for the gut reaction Juliaâs father has for me.â
âI expect,â Helen offered, âitâs because he sees you as taking away his only child. Lord only knows how he doted on that girl. She was the child of his late years, and the time Miriam had delivering her, he knew heâd never have another.â
Dallas hadnât known that last fact. It somehow humanized Big Daddy. âBut this goes back to when I was a kid.â
Aaron frowned, then said something odd. âEvery parent wants the very best for his child. With you living so close to the Richardson property, I think Big Daddy had his eye on this day ever since you started to shave. Your friendship with Julia may have been secret, but that wouldnât have stopped the manâs suspicions and fears.â
Dallas looked hard at Aaron. The Sutters were childless. But the catch in Aaronâs voice when heâd said âevery parentâ had hinted at a deep and heartfelt emotion.
âYou know,â Helen added, âthis whole dislike might have arisen not so much because of Dallas but because of the feud Big Daddy had with Rhetta.â
This was the first Dallas had heard of a feud between his future father-in-law and his mother.
âYou may be right, Helen.â Aaron chuckled. âRhetta Parker was one of the few in Cannons Crossing who never caved in to Big Daddyâs will.â
âWhat are you talking about?â Dallas couldnât believe his ears. His mother had been tough, but heâd always thought sheâd avoided her neighbors, the Richardsons. The Sutters were suggesting a more confrontational woman.
